Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition, speaks during election of Speaker of 18th Lok Sabha in New Delhi on June 26,2024.
Congratulating Om Birla for being elected speaker of the Lok Sabha for a second term, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he hoped the Opposition would be allowed to raise the voice of people in the House.
He also said that it is important that there is cooperation between them and trust it means a lot to us because they want this house to work well all time.
“I congratulate you on your victory… I am congratulating you on behalf of whole INDIA alliance. The assembly reflects view of our nation’s people…Of course government has political power but opposition represents voice of India,” he said.
“The opposition would like to help you with your job. And so we believe that you won’t keep us silent at parliament,” he added.
This time, according to Mr. Gandhi, more voices have been represented by the opposition than before; therefore it is very essential that their voices are heard within those walls.
“I trust your permission will let us express ourselves and represent Indians opinions.”
It was not about how efficiently this House runs; it was about how much voice from India can hear in this House-whether or not it can be heard fully.
“It is undemocratic idea which suggests that running the House efficiently involves silencing any opposing voices. This election showed that Indians expect opposition to defend Constitution and we are sure that by permitting Opposition speak up for itself ,you will fulfil duty prescribed by our Constitution” stated Congress MP.
