With Thanjavur district having the most cases, the police in the Central Zone that spans nine districts have booked 342 prohibition cases on June 19 and 20. Several people died in a hooch tragedy in Kallakurichi District and this is what led to these actions.
Thanjavur district was at number one with 60 cases; it was followed by Karur district (50), Pudukottai district (49), Tiruvarur (48), Tiruchi (41), Mayiladuthurai district (21) and Nagapattinam district (20). All such persons as sold alcohol without licence were being sternly dealt with as well as hoarding liquor and smuggling it illegally in those nine districts are highlighted by a press release from police here on Friday. Thirteen individuals who had been involved in repeated offences of this kind have been arrested under the Goondas Act.
According to the release, during both day and night, there were policemen who came around various parts of Central Zone stopping illicit distillation, unauthorized selling, and smuggling of alcohol.
The Superintendent of Police has given orders to go strictly as far as dealing with those engaging in crimes related to drinks. Till June 20 this year alone, 17,528 cases were registered in central zone against people convicted of illicit brewing activities. During this period a total of 17757 persons were apprehended for illegal alcoholic production totaling 1,45,111 litres that was gotten rid off completely according to that press note.
