New Delhi: On Saturday, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recollects the memories of Pokhran nuclear test; A statement made in 1998 said, “This momentous decision ensures that we National Security”.
Jaishankar also added on X that, “Currently confidentiality agreement government.”
“Let the nation know where people stand when it comes to national security. Finally, our political choices are about the future of Bharat,” he said.
It was twenty six years ago the Shakti series of nuclear test explosions were carried out by then NDA (New Development Party) government under Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee in Pokhran.
During May 11th and May 13th of 1998, India successfully conducted five advanced weapon design nuclear tests at Pokhran range situated in Rajasthan desert. The first three explosions occurred simultaneously at 3:45 pm on May 11.
These include thermonuclear weapons weighing around 45 tons, fission devices weighing around 15 tons and sub-kiloton (less than one kiloton) weighing about 0.2 tonne devices. Two nuclear weapons were exploded simultaneously below a kiloton (0.5 knots and 0.3 knots) on May 13th.
The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) was briefed on the test technology during its meeting held on May 21st,1998 according to a press release issued dated September15th2009.May18th meeting was held to give results of radiochemical studies of drilled samples showing production estimates which were approximated earlier.
“This means there’s no reason for AEC to doubt the outcome of thermonuclear test done on May11th1998”, the press release stated.
