A survivor of the devastating landslides that swept through Mundakkai in Wayanad, Ayyappan has nothing left – no house, no family and no future. However, a chance encounter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a relief camp on Saturday has offered a ray of hope to the aged person who lost nine members of his family in the calamity and now only hopes for another roof over his head.
“The Prime Minister met twelve of us from the camp; some were even children; there was one person translating everything; I just asked for a home; he promised to help,” said Mr. Ayyappan while speaking to reporters.
The PM visited the landslides-hit areas, talked to selected prisoners in relief camps and doctors asking about the sick people’s situation.
Mr. Ayyappan told Mr. Modi everything as they interacted each other.
“I told him that nine members of my family were lost. We lost our land, but land is not the issue — I lost my family,” said Mr. Ayyappan.
He narrated how “the PM held my shoulders” after he had disclosed his losses.
