Rahul Gandhi, the Congress leader, at a rainy monsoon day in New Delhi (Tuesday August 20, 2024), paid tribute to the former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi at his birth anniversary at Veer Bhumi.
India’s youngest prime minister and a 40-year-old Rajiv Gandhi took office from 1984 till 1989. Later on, he was killed in April during an election campaign in Sriperumbudur district of Tamil Nadu by a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on May 21, 1991.
Mr. Modi wrote on X “Tributes to our former Prime Minister Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji on his birth anniversary”.
In Delhi national capital Rahul Gandhi paid floral tribute to Rajiv at Veer Bhumi. Also Mallikarjun Kharge, President of Congress party paid tribute for Late PM Rajeev saying that he brought India into the 21st century with his unprecedented contribution.
“Today the country is celebrating Sadbhavana Diwas. A great son of India was Former Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi who ignited a ray of hope in crores of Indians and with his unprecedented contribution he brought India into the 21st century,” said Mr Kharge posting it on X.
”He also initiated many other important schemes such as lowering voting age to eighteen years old; strengthening panchayat raj; revolutionising telecommunications and IT; computerisation program; peace accords goes on women empowerment Universal Immunization Programme; New Education Policy emphasizing inclusive education…”, he further stated “On his birthday we pay sincere tribute to Bharat Ratna – Rajiv Gandhi ji,” added Mr. Kharge
According to Congress Party, modernity, technology and youth were supported by Rajiv Gandhi. The official handle of the congress party posted this message upon X: “Today we honor Shri Rajiv Gandhi the visionary leader who championed modernity, technology and youth empowerment. His commitment to a united secular India continues to guide us as we renew our pledge to build a prosperous and inclusive nation.”.
Rajya Sabha MP of party Jairam Ramesh also celebrated Rajiv Gandhi’s contribution towards India’s political and technological landscape. “Today is Rajiv Gandhi@80. His was a short but very consequential political life. The March 1985 Budget in which he played a key role heralded a new approach to economic policy. The manifesto for the 1991 Lok Sabha elections, on which he spent long hours a few weeks before his tragic assassination, provided the foundations for the Rao-Manmohan Singh reforms of June-July 1991,” his post on X said.
“He was truly Prime Minister who made peace possible in troubled regions like Assam, Punjab, Mizoram and Tripura by his statesmanship that put national interest above the immediate interests of his party…We remember today not just a Prime Minister but also an outstanding human being compassionate without malice no revenge sought or sought for any self-advancement”, Mr. Ramesh added.
After her mother Indira Gandhi was assassinated; she took control of Congress as its leader in 1984.
