JD Vance, the Ohio Senator, on Wednesday night mounted a severe attack against Vice President Kamala Harris. He cited his examples of how fake she was and hesitated whether to call her a “phony” during a campaign rally in Glendale, Arizona.
These remarks came just hours after Donald Trump, the ex-president became news for questioning Harris’ identity at the National Association of Black Journalists convention that took place in Chicago.
Vance, who is running as Trump’s vice presidential pick, criticized Harris for her upbringing and recent changes in her public persona. Referring to Harris’s recent campaign appearance, he said: “She went down to Georgia this week and started talking with a fake Southern accent”. Kamala Harris grew up in Canada. It does not speak like that in Vancouver or Quebec. What is wrong with her?” he asked.
Earlier on Trump caused national controversies by accusing Harris of changing race to get votes. “She was Indian all the way, and then all of a sudden she became a Black person,” Trump remarked, despite Harris’s long-standing identification as a Black woman due to her Indian-American mother and Jamaican-American father.
Vance in addition to working with conservatives such as venture capitalist Peter Thiel, also branded Harris as a ‘dangerous San Francisco liberal’ and failed ‘border czar’ due to her record on immigration matters. He repeated unfounded claims that undocumented migrants are burdening government resources and inviting drug cartels into America.
When Vance made these comments during his speech at an Arizona rally his audience cheered loudly reflecting heightened tensions and partisan divides now present in politics.
