On Tuesday, Masood Ali who was twenty eight years old was killed by his friends after a heated argument over a trivial ₹13,000. Over the last two weeks, there have been 5-7 cases in which Ravina Dhurvey, 28-year old and other friends stabbed one of their own while having an argument on dinner and drinks. Several impulsive killings have emphasized the rise in murder cases due to disputes involving petty quarrels especially within this State.
In fact, the latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data revealed that such cases have increased by as much as 27% (691 in number) in Telangana over just one year between 2021-2022.
“Most of the murder cases are manslaughter of momentary rage with very less premeditated ones. The same holds true for this year and few earlier years,” maintained Cyberabad Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty adding that there are few re-offenders in murders but some rare serial killers.
“This generation now is very high functionalised people .they can snap at anything any tiny little thing irritates them most people is dealing with stress unattend to anxiety issue disorder depression till something happens it goes unnoticed,” said purnima Nagaraja Mental Health Professional/therapist at Dhrithi Wellness Clinic.
Another factor is rising anxiety and uncertainty making lower tolerance levels among individuals due to lack of empathy while cognitive dissonance stands out prominently she elucidated.
She added that it could be seen even in instances like that when Ravina Dhurvey who was 28 years old got killed for serving dinner late by her husband followed by a psychologist who argued that maybe it’s also about “sense of entitlement” coming from patriarchy. Nevertheless, it might be maligned depression and frustration among males behind these kinds of traits too.
According to clinical psychologist at TherapHeal Poornima Chandrashekhar, the other contributing factors include a lower socio-economic background, poor educational level, family backgrounds and being emotionally vacuous because of a troubled past from early childhood on. Meanwhile, she reports that lack of criminal profiling and in-depth criminal psychology studies as well as insufficient platforms for professional counseling are also increasing problems.
“However stringent is the Indian Penal Code a lot of times what we call petty offenses slide away from within its jurisdiction. We often wait till when such crimes result in brutal murder of a woman but don’t see it growing,” added Dr. Nagaraja.
Experts have pointed out that there are not enough psychiatrists and counselors available to meet demand and that this can be mitigated by creating more platforms for professional counselling making it easier to access help and starting to address mental health issues at an earlier age thereby reducing these cases as well.
