The second largest city of Pakistan, Lahore, witnessed a record breaking rainfall which led to houses and hospitals getting flooded.
Some parts close to India saw 353 millimeters (14 inches) of it in hours, the water agency said.
According to officials, this surpassed the previous figure by 332 mm over 3 hours in July 1980.
AFP reported that according to Farooq Dar deputy director at the PMD (Pakistan Meteorological Department), this was “unprecedented rainfall” in the area.
Lahore is closed for business
A person has been reported dead within Lahore from electrocution. The commissioner has therefore declared a state of emergency closing all schools and offices in Lahore today.
In less than an hour downpour had already filled up several streets while some sections of Jinnah hospital as well as services hospitals were partly under water thus causing complications for patients admitted there.
A local official said that government are trying everything possible to ensure that cleaning activity starts at once both at the facility and throughout the district itself.
The last three days have seen heavy rains also pummel Khyber Pakhtunkhwa located on mountainous North side. Provincial disaster management authority reports show that about twenty four people gave their lives during these events.
From June to September, Pakistan experiences heavy rainfall during monsoon season in this region.
However, catastrophic rain took place in South and North regions of Pakistan mainly during 2022 with researchers attributing it towards climate change or long term weather shift.
