A Chinese woman has has increased her weight by 20kg due to work anguish thereby heightening the fears concerning “Overwork obesity”, which entails being overweight due to work pressure.

Twenty-four year old Ouyang Wenjing is from Guangdong province, according to South China Morning Post’s report. Wherein she has gained 20kg in 1 year her weight raising from 60 to 80 kg as captured in Xiaohongshu in which one year Wentao. The ex-employee also called her line of work a “danger” for her body and brain. Long working hours, unpredictable hours and dependence on food 24/7 were some of the reasons given. After quitting the job in June, Ouyang has found her health condition getting better.

After such major weight increase, the woman reported a gradual decrease during secondary school. In secondary school she weighed 105kg and lost 45 kilograms in four years span. She uses the microblogging site Xiaohongshu and holds forty thousand followers acting as a freelance weight loss influencer.

Ouyang lost 6 kg within a month through modifying the food taken to more vegetables, grains and proteins.

These sentiments are shared by many other people including Ouyang in China. Another 33-year-old tech worker from Shanghai posting on Xiaohongshu said that the work stress made her eat too many desserts and as a result, she added 3kg of weight in 2 months. “Everything I could have put into willpower was put into work, and there was none left for life”, she added.

In as much as the Chinese labour laws enforce that a worker be allowed not to work for more than 40 hours a week, this has been flouted by a number of companies. The ‘996’ work culture – working, Mondays to Saturdays, from 9A.M. to 9P.M. is still rampant, especially among tech companies.

According to Zuo Xiaoxia who works in the Nutrition Department of the 309 hospital of People’s liberation army which is in charge of Health Times, late dinners, overeating as well as lack of sleep leads to overwork fatigue as a consequence of the obesity epidemic. She recommended more vegetables, less meat, regular food timing, and physical activity within the everyday routine to remain healthy.
