In the past seventy-two hours, the UN refugee agency received information that more than 30000 Syrian nationals which comprise the majority have entered Syria from Lebanon owing to a fierce conflict between Israeli and Hezbollah forces that has claimed numerous lives in Lebanon.
According to Gonzalo Vargas Llosa, the representative for UNHCR in Syria, approximately 80% of those crossings are Syrian, and about 20% are Lebanese. He also pointed out that 50% are parents or guardians and that males are fewer than females in making the journey.
An extremely hard decision, he was in charge of the crisis response operations for over 20 countries. “They are leaving one country that is at war, to another that has been in a crisis conflict for almost thirteen years.”
“We will have to see over the next few days how many more do so,” added the representative.
