Cliché notwithstanding, the police have arrested one suspect over an alleged rape and murder of a lady doctor that took place at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital under the North Kolkata Police District Area on Saturday morning (August 10, 2024)

According to sources in the police department, Mr. Sanjay Roy who is now accused was taken into custody after being quizzed till late night of Friday (August 9, 2024). Another source said he was called to answer questions about remnants of Bluetooth earphone found at the crime scene

On Friday, around 11:30 am, the victim’s body was found in the seminar hall located on the fourth floor of emergency building at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.” “She was sexually assaulted and killed. They are covering it up,” said her father through local media.

It is reported that she was working on night shift as a second-year post graduate trainee in respiratory medicine at her hospital (August) last Thursday.

Meanwhile, junior doctors across hospitals and medical colleges in Kolkata have called for an end to services as they claim that female medical staffs are not safe within hospital premises. All non-emergency medical services have been halted at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital with junior doctors and residents carrying out protest marches demanding for people’s arrest who were involved and increased security.

“We have so many lady physicians working round-the-clock at this institution. So many parents’ worries do not even feel safe here anymore,” she complained as she protested against unsafe working environments for women doctors . “Even our parents are worried about our safety.”

Another student observer from RGKMC opined that there might have been others involved in killing the victim adding that students and junior doctors want strict actions be taken against all probable offenders.
