On Wednesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) accused Paresh Baruah, a fugitive head of the banned United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), and five others for an alleged “terror attack” on an army camp located in eastern Assam half a year ago.
The NIA mentioned that ULFA(I) which is based in Myanmar had planned the attack where two motorbike riders threw two grenades at an army camp in Kakopathar village of Tinsukia district on November 22, 2023. The assault caused no injuries.
The agency filed its chargesheet before Guwahati’s NIA Special Court on Wednesday with Baruah as one of the charged as well as three other military leaders including Arunodoy Dohutia who was a self-styled brigadier. On its part, while Parag Borah and Bijoy Moran were arrested in December 2023, these four being fugitives from justice.
The NIA-supported indictment was lodged under sections applicable in Indian Penal Code, Unlawful Activities (Prevention Act and Explosive Substances Act showing how the ULFA(I) had developed “a terror network of recruitment, training camps and execution of terrorist attacks.”
According to NIA findings, ULFA(I) has been increasingly using social media platforms to recruit people especially young minds who are then subjected to terrorism training.
