Tuesday marked the day that New Zealand’s spy service classified China as a “problematic intelligence entity” and warned that the South Pacific country was susceptible to external interference.
In an annual threat report released by the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service, it was revealed that “several other nations” have been engaging in “malicious activity” within its borders, but said the cases of China were “particularly complex and deceptive”.
Particularly, there were accusations against China that it would utilize fake non-profit organizations to partner with regional communities in replacing genuine diverse community voices with pro-state narratives.
For example, a Chinese owned community media outlet devoted to the Chinese-language propaganda carried out Beijing’s propaganda, it stated.
“Such front organizations are often projected as non-governmental and community oriented… but there are no visible connections, local lands and sources of funds for such organizations,” the report read.
The unpleasantly honest wordings come after the fresh center right government in New Zealand has been moving the foreign affairs of the country towards its traditional allies.
This followed more than a decade of increased dependency of trade with China which is the largest overseas trade for New Zealand.
Welington in March put out that a Chinese state-owned company was behind cyber-attack that crippled some sensitive systems within the government in 2021.
China rejected the accusations of hackings and branded criticisms against New Zealand as an attack by Washington puppets.
China maintains that it would never interfere in the internal affairs of any other country, in response to the spy report on Tuesday.
We expect that the New Zealand side will have a coherent and objective view of China and that positive conditions will be fostered in the further development of the absolutely healthy and steady ties between the two nations, said Mao Ning, the Foreign Ministry Sampson.
New Zealand’s spy agency said the geographical location and the Pacific region of New Zealand meant that the country was “vulnerable” to other countries that are trying to establish a larger foothold.
Prime Minister of New Zealand Christopher Luxon said earlier in the year that there is no possibility for New Zealand to rely on the geographical “splendid isolation” cover any longer.
