The Department of Conservation has fined a man from New Zealand after a video of him trying to “body slam” an orca went viral. On this video posted on Instagram, the unidentified male jumps off a boat and onto the whale shouting “I touched it.”

Conservationists and other people watching the film became angry at it hence alerted authorities. A crime that is highly punishable under the law of New Zealand was committed by this guy when he harassed marine wildlife. The Department of Conservation, according to CNN report stated that it stressed respecting marine life and observing wildlife protection regulations.

The statement released by the Department of Conservation’s spokesperson about these events read as follows: “Harming wildlife isn’t just against the law; it can also be very risky as well. We advocate for individuals who come into contact with marine mammals to do so responsibly and from safe distances.”

A World Wildlife Fund representative commented on this incident stating, “This is exactly why we need better awareness campaigns educating people about responsible interactions with wildlife.” These magnificent creatures live in fascinating ecosystems; however, most individuals disregard their actions’ consequences.

Even though the video was later removed from Instagram, before that several viewers saw it and criticized it seriously. The social media page where this guy’s act was shown had many others who condemned his behaviors. “This kind of behavior is unacceptable,” one user tweeted. One such person wrote: “We should not stand idle while our oceans are destroyed by idiots like him!”

The incident itself suggests that there needs to be more awareness regarding how important it is to protect sea life. The general public should inform relevant authorities if they come across any other occurrences like this while promoting good conduct towards animals living in their natural habitat.
