BURST! UN special rapporteur to the country warned of a situation in which Myanmar’s junta is “trying its best to destroy a nation that it can’t control.”
A truce brokered by Beijing amid fighting between an alliance of armed ethnic minority groups and military in January has failed.
In 2021, this ceasefire brought some respite from widespread clashes in the northern part of the Southeast Asian country after 2021 when coup ended democratic rule.
The special rapporteur for the UN said during a briefing on national security matters with Thailand that “the Junta is on its knees, losing soldiers, losing military facilities, really losing ground.”
“It almost seems as if the Junta is trying to wreck a nation that is unmanageable by it.”
According to him, lost territories have forced the army into attacking civilians more than ever before including many schools hospitals and monastic institutions over the last half year.
“The stakes are massive!”
Earlier this week after days of fighting ethnic minority fighters captured a town from the military on a major trade route leading to China’s Yunnan province.
Fighting has shaken up northern Shan state since last month end when an offensive against army by an alliance of ethnicity armed groups resumed anew.
This action has destroyed what was left from previous truce made by China between Arakan Army (AA), Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
