US President-elect Donald Trump has slammed outgoing President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, calling it a “miscarriage of justice.” The pardon, issued on Sunday, absolves Hunter Biden of convictions related to gun crimes and tax violations.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump questioned whether the pardon extended to individuals imprisoned for their roles in the Capitol Hill riots took place on January 6, 2021, whom he referred to as “J-6 Hostages.” Trump and his supporters have consistently portrayed these individuals as patriots, unjustly imprisoned for their actions.
“Does the Pardon given by Joe to Hunter include the J-6 Hostages, who have now been imprisoned for years? Such an abuse and miscarriage of Justice!” Trump wrote, hinting at potential pardons for the January 6 rioters once he assumes office.
Biden defends Hunter’s pardon
President Biden defended the decision to pardon his son, framing the legal actions against Hunter as politically motivated. In a statement, Biden argued that individuals in similar circumstances—such as those with tax issues tied to addiction—typically receive non-criminal resolutions.
“From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I watched my son being selectively and unfairly prosecuted,” Biden said.
“Without aggravating factors like use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a weapon as a straw purchaser, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges solely for how they filled out a gun form,” the US President added.
Biden condemned the collapse of a plea deal that had been negotiated with the Department of Justice, associating it to political pressure from his opponents in Congress.
The President said that the charges were instigated to attack him politically, not on the merits of the case.
“The charges in his cases came about only after several of my political opponents in Congress instigated them to attack me and oppose my election. Had the plea deal held, it would have been a fair, reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases,” Biden said.
Trump signals pardon for January 6 rioters
Trump’s reaction also renewed speculation that he would issue pardons for individuals imprisoned over the Capitol Hill riots. Trump has long been mentioning the that these individuals acted patriotically, echoing his supporters’ claims that they have been treated unfairly by the justice system.
