On Tuesday, at the Democratic National Convention (DNC), Michelle Obama gave a strong and confrontational speech criticizing former US President Donald Trump and expressing her support for Kamala Harris.
Michelle made a direct attack on Trump by quoting his earlier controversial comments about undocumented migrants taking “Black jobs.” “Who’s going to tell him that the job he is currently seeking might be one of those Black jobs?” Michelle asked. This comment was meant to underscore the ex-president’s history of race-baiting derogatory speeches and birther beliefs that suggested Obama may not have been born in America.
“Donald Trump spent years trying to make us afraid of each other,” Michelle went on. “His view of the world was so small and limited, that he felt threatened by two black women who were succeeding while working hard and being highly educated.”
Obama didn’t limit her criticism to that alone. In addition, she also spoke against insinuations by Trump as regards Kamala Harris among others on them not being real Americans; she said “No one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American, no one.”
The Former First Lady did not only focus her entire speech on attacking Trump but also called on all Americans irrespective of their political affiliations. According to Michelle, “Look, I don’t care how you identify politically, whether you’re Democrat, Republican, independent or none of the above; this is our time to stand up for what we know in our hearts is right.” She added that “To stand up, not just for our basic freedoms, but for decency and humanity, for basic respect, dignity and empathy for values at the very foundation of this democracy.”
Michelle then turned towards Kamala Harris whom she hailed as one of the most qualified presidential candidates ever. Pointing out Harris’ accomplishments along with her dignified representation which comes from a line of powerful females enabled Michelle say “Kamala Harris is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency.”
To begin with, Michelle Obama started off her speech with a message of hope reflecting on an uncertain nation and subtly critiquing Trump’s time in office. “America, hope is making a comeback,” she declared which made the crowd give her a standing ovation.
