According to Meta, it will remove the limits that were imposed on former president Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts. These measures were put in place after his supporters violently stormed the Capitol back in 2021.
The company stated, “Republican Party presidential nominee, former President Trump should no longer be subjected to more severe suspension penalties.”
Trump’s accounts were later suspended indefinitely following January 6th attack; with a conclusion being reached that he had praised people causing violence via social media.Nonetheless, they were restored two years later although they came with warnings about likely future sanctions. However, this extra restriction has lately been removed by Meta.
Meta defended itself saying in a blog post, “As we weigh our duty to enable political expression, we believe that the nominees for President should have an equal right to speak to the American people.” The firm also joked that all US presidential contenders are bound by similar community standards as every other user of Facebook or Instagram including policies meant against hate speeches or incitement to violence.
Former president Trump who became the first ever ex-president convicted was banned from other platforms like Twitter and YouTube. Although these bans were eventually lifted last year, Trump mostly relies on his own social media platform known as Truth Social. His Facebook page which has 34 million followers carries posts initially made on Truth Social plus messages inviting people to rallies and campaign videos.
