GUWAHATI: Two of its four MLAs have been suspended by the Meghalaya Congress due to anti-party activities.
The two legislators are Gabriel Wahlang from Nongstoin and Charles Marngar from Mawhati Assembly constituency.
The suspension came after they did not attend a meeting with Vincent H. Pala, (Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee and former MP) at the party’s state office on Friday.
They were among three MLAs invited to deny their purported plan of joining National People’s Party (NPP) led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, which also includes BJP as a junior partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
In letters sent separately to Mr. Wahlang and Mr. Marngar, MPCC general secretary Wansuk Syiem said he had been instructed by the “competent authority” that they should be put out of Congress forth with for six years or until further notice because of them involvement with anti-party activities.
MLA links to MDA govt. questioned
These actions contradict directly with what our party believes in since. They conflict with our ideals according to a letter dated August 16 written by the general secretary MPCC, Wansuk Syiem.– This made him write a letter stating that recent reports from Block. Congress Committee and frontal organisations show their association with the MDA government. “This disciplinary action has become very important because this kind of behaviour contradicts everything that our party stands for.” The press release read.
However, Celestine Lyngdoh, MLA Umsning who is also going over to NPP will be left out for now.
Honble Speaker, Responding to this directive Lyngdoh told Pala that xxx have not yet decided on whether or not they would like to quit congress. “We cannot abscond when we know there are funds available for us if we join NPP,” he admitted.
“Don’t fall into the trap of NPP. The party will promise development but there will be nothing on the ground and projects don’t move ahead from foundation stones,” Pala remarked.
In 2023, Congress won five seats out of 60 in the Meghalaya Assembly. One member, Saleng A Sangma, was elected to the Tura parliamentary seat leaving Gambegre Assembly constituency vacant.
