A Massachusetts state police recruit died after suffering a medical emergency during training at the academy in New Braintree, Massachusetts, on Friday. The 25-year-old, Enrique Delgado-Garcia, was sworn in as trooper on his deathbed shortly before passing away.
Delgado-Garcia became unresponsive in the boxing ring during a defensive tactics exercise at the State Police Academy on Thursday, according to officials.
Delgado-Garcia was struck in the head and remained unconscious for nearly 10 minutes. The academy’s medical team responded quickly, transporting him to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, but he ultimately did not survive, officials said.
“He became unresponsive during a defensive tactics exercise,” a Massachusetts State Police spokesperson told CBS News. “Despite the heroic efforts of medical professionals to save him, Trainee Delgado-Garcia passed away at the hospital,” the spokesperson added.

Investigation underway

The Worcester County District Attorney’s office is investigating the circumstances surrounding Delgado-Garcia’s death.

‘This is devastating…’

State police colonel John Mawn Jr offered condolences to Delgado-Garcia’s family and emphasized the department’s support. “The Massachusetts State Police mourns the tragic loss of Trainee Enrique Delgado-Garcia, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones,” Mawn said, as quoted by CBS News.
Governor Maura Healey also expressed her sorrow, acknowledging Delgado-Garcia’s dedication. “I’m heartbroken by the loss of State Police Trainee Enrique Delgado-Garcia, who had committed himself to a career serving the people of Massachusetts. This is a devastating time for all who knew and loved him,” Healey said.

Who was Delgado-Garcia?

Delgado-Garcia, from Worcester, joined the 90th Recruit Training Troop in April and was set to graduate on October 9. He had previously worked as a victim witness advocate in the Worcester District attorney’s office before being sworn in as a state trooper by police officials. He will receive full state police honors.

Final hours of Delgado-Garcia

In Delgado-Garcia’s final hours on Friday night, Massachusetts State Police administered the oath of office, said MSP spokesperson David McGuirk.
“He was surrounded by family, friends, and classmates during the bilingual ceremony, which ended with him being pinned with his Trooper Badge,” McGuirk shared about the emotional event.

On Saturday, Delgado-Garcia’s body was escorted from UMass Memorial to the Chief Medical Examiner’s office in Westfield by state police.

Safety concerns

Former defensive tactics coordinator Todd McGhee said that safety measures are designed to prevent injuries and ensure controlled conditions during defensive training, which recruits undergo for 40 to 50 hours.
“Injuries like this are not only tragic, but they’re incredibly rare,” McGhee said, suggesting that changes to the academy’s training program might be forthcoming. “This is an extremely unfortunate situation, and adjustments may be necessary,” he added.
