Protests are ongoing in West Bengal in relation to reports of a rape and murder case involving a trainee doctor, so on Saturday (August 17, 2024) the mother of Nirbhaya who was the victim of gang-raped in Delhi in 2012 accused Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal for “failing” to deal with the situation.
“The Chief Minister instead of using her power against culprits is trying to sideline by arranging protests”, said Nirbhaya’s mother.
A 31-year old PG trainee doctor was allegedly raped and subsequently murdered while on duty at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata on August 9. There have been protests throughout the country by medical students from her college and health workers demanding justice for her.

Nirbhaya’s mother criticised Ms. Banerjee saying that, “Mamata Banerjee is misguiding public sentiment rather than taking action against those who are responsible.”
“Through these protests she wants people to forget about what happened? This lady herself is a woman; hence, she should have taken strict actions against rapists as head of this state. She needs to step down since her role as chief executive has been ineffective,” she continued.
Ms. Mamata Banerjee led a protest rally through Moulali to Dorina Crossing in Kolkata on Friday (August 16, 2024), demanding justice for the woman doctor. She demanded that they hang such criminals.
According to Nirbhaya’s mother, without the Central and State governments seriously considering moving court for prompt punishment against rapists; every day such acts will continue happening elsewhere across India.
“When there are no safety measures for girls at medical colleges like Calcutta or their beasts are tortured, we can imagine the position of women in our society”, she claimed.
A day after the trainee doctor was allegedly raped and killed, West Bengal Police arrested one person in connection with the crime. Later, pointing to some shortcomings in police investigation, Calcutta High Court transferred the case to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
