The Trinamool Congress on Wednesday (January 1, 2025) observed its 28th foundation day, with party chairperson Mamata Banerjee asserting that her party will continue for the rights of the people.
“Our struggle for the rights of the people of Bengal is ongoing and will continue in the days ahead,” said Ms. Banerjee, who had founded the party 28 years ago said.
The West Bengal Chief Minister also posted a song that she had composed herself, which was sung by renowned artist and Minister Indranil Sen, adding a personal touch to the celebration.
Later in the afternoon Ms. Banerjee expressed gratitude to every single member of the party and thanked them for their dedication and resilience, highlighting the importance of unity and service.
“Over the course of two decades, every protest, every victory, and even every challenge has reaffirmed our core belief: politics is not about power but about SERVICE. As we celebrate this milestone, I urge every Trinamool soldier to renew their pledge to fight for the people, and remember that the soul of our party is rooted in the ethos of ‘Maa, Mati, Manush ( mother, soil and people),” she added.
Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee also took to social media to express gratitude toward the party’s workers. “TMC is dedicated to the welfare of the people of the country and the state. I salute the hard work and sacrifices of all the TMC workers,” Mr. Banerjee wrote on social media.
The foundation day of the party was also observed across party offices across the State, where the party flag was unfurled.
The party was founded 28 years ago as a breakaway from the Congress party on January 1, 1998. In 2011 the Trinamool Congress allied with the Congress and defeated the Left Front which has been in power for 34 years. Since 2011, the party has been in power and consolidated its political position despite allegations of corruption and misrule. The party won 29 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. The party will face another challenge in 2026 when the assembly polls will be held. Another challenge which the party is facing is factionalism and time and again party chairperson Mamata Banerjee had to assert that her writ will run in the party.
At Bhangar in the eastern fringes of Kolkata two factions of the party one led by former Bhangar MLA Arabul Islam and another by Canning Purba MLA Shaukat Mollah clashed with each other. The vehicle of Arabul Islam who was hoisting the party flag was attacked.
