The Maharashtra government has introduced another women-oriented policy just after the Majhi Ladki Bahin scheme, making higher education free for girls from the Economically Weaker Section (EWS), Socially and Economically Backward Classes (SEBC), and Other Backward Classes (OBC).
During a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde chaired and resolved to this effect. Moreover, a government resolution will exempt orphans of both sexes from paying tuition fee and examination fees.
“Ordinary families’ daughters would be aided in realizing higher education dream through this decision,” tweeted X by Women and Child Development Minister Aditi Tatkare on Tuesday.
According to the resolution, it is expected that there would be more girls entering professional courses in line with National Education Policy (NEP), as millions are spent on the same goal. “So far, those of OBC and EWS groups are getting 50% refund on tuition fees whereas only 36% of girls take up professional courses which includes agriculture, pharmacy, engineering among others” it reads.
