Luigi Mangione, aged 26, was charged with murder in the brazen Manhattan killing of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO Brian Thompson after an alert individual at a Pennsylvania McDonald’s identified a man who was found with incriminating evidence linking him to the fatal shooting.
An Ivy League alumnus from a prominent Maryland property family, possessed a firearm believed to be the murder weapon from last Wednesday’s shooting of Brian Thompson, along with documents indicating resentment towards corporate America, according to NBC citing police.
The suspect faced initial court proceedings in Altoona after his arrest. He was detained on weapons charges due to possessing a firearm matching the murder weapon’s description. The arrest concluded a six-day search, though investigations continue.
On Monday evening, Manhattan prosecutors filed murder and additional charges against Mangione, as indicated in court records. He remained in Pennsylvania custody, where he faced charges of unlicensed firearm possession, forgery and providing false identification to authorities.
Mangione was discovered at the McDonald’s wearing medical protection and using a laptop. After a customer’s recognition prompted an employee’s emergency call, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry confirmed the arrest.
Altoona Police Officer Tyler Frye reported immediate recognition of the suspect. Upon questioning about recent New York travel, the suspect displayed visible nervousness, according to arrest documentation.
Authorities discovered a 3D-printed firearm and silencer in his possession. The weapon featured metal components and was recovered during his 9.15 am (local time) arrest.
