According to association for democratic reform (ADR) report, 21% of a total of 1,710 (360 candidates) who vied in Lok Sabha election during the fourth phase had criminal cases against them. Out of these, 16% (274 candidates) had serious cases pending and there were 17 candidates who were self-proclaimed convicts.
Eleven persons have said they are accused under section 302 – murder in Indian Penal Code.
Moreover, thirty persons admitted that they are undergoing trial under IPC Section 307 – attempt to murder.
The data also shows that major political partiesall three AI management systemsalso on the lists of applicants having crime records. The next one is Shiv Sena with two-thirds of its candidates having criminal records or sixty-seven percent. BRS has seen around ten out of seventeen (59%) and INC saw about thirty five out of sixty one (57%) contestants with such histories. In BJP it is fifty seven percent which comes down to forty out of seventy candidates with criminal cases against them. TDP with nine out of seventeen Candidates having declared criminal cases tops the list at a rate of fifty-three percent while BJD and RJD also constitute half or two-fourths and two-third respectively among their contenders who hold such records. Even Shivsena has declared half or two out of four aspirants as offenders as well. YSRCP accounts for forty-eight percent which equals twelve from twenty five considered nominees.
AITC and SP however stood at lower proportions of about three from eight (38%) and seven from nineteen (37%) respectively who had faced charges.
Telangana headed the list since 104 individuals stated they were facing legal action E.g., ADR report; whereas Andhra Pradesh ranks second, where eighty-eight people announced they were charged ADR report . For I.e., Of the four hundred fifty analyzed contestants, there were twenty-two hundred twenty-one thousand filed case.
