New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday accepted an invitation to public debate and Prime Minister Modi. Demands were made by two former judges and a senior journalist in their letters to both leaders.
Madan B Lokur, Ajit P Shah who are ex-judges and N Ram, a senior journalist said that they had written a letter inviting the Indian premier, Narendra Modi and Rahul Gandhi, a front-runner of the opposition party. The next general elections could see the applicant for either side flattening the allegations leveled against it.
Furthermore, they mentioned that people are tired of listening only of accusations as well as challenges from both sides but nothing sensible.
Rahul replied to this invitation stating that “such debate will be a positive move as far as major political parties are concerned who need to articulate how they view democracy in this country.”
“This is good initiative. Consequently I accept your offer for further debates while we also expect presence of our prime minister in such talks,” he added.
“In response to your invitation, I have spoken with Congress President Malikajun Haq. We believe that such discussions would enable society to better understand our different visions and make more informed choices,” wrote Rahul. “Please let us know if/when the Prime Minister agrees to join us so we can discuss modalities and format of the debate. Thank you again for this initiative. I look forward to participating in a productive and historic debate,” he continued.
A Public Debate Would be A Great Precedent Whereby Leaders Responded Directly To The Public And Helped Anticipate The Country’S Political Future.
“With this objective in mind, we think all citizens would benefit greatly if their top politicians spoke directly through public debates held on non-partisan non-commercial platforms”, they said saying “for example if members from both sides speak up it won’t work”.
Madan B Lokur served as a Supreme Court judge while AP Shah was the former Chief Justice of the Delhi high court. N Ram, a senior journalist and past Editor-in-Chief of The Hindu newspaper.
