A leopard caught in a snare and injured was found on private land at Kakkayangad in Muzhakkunnu panchayat in Kannur, Kerala, on Monday (January 6, 2025) morning, prompting swift action from the authorities. The leopard was discovered around 8:30 a.m. on the property of B.K. Prakashan.

Following the discovery, a large crowd gathered in the area. The police and forest officials quickly arrived at the scene, cordoning off the area to ensure public safety and prevent disturbances.

Cage set up

Kannur Divisional Forest Officer P. Karthick confirmed that a team of forest officials from two sections, along with personnel from Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, had reached the site. A specialised four-member team led by forest veterinarian Ajesh Mohandas from Wayanad was also present to tranquilise the leopard. A cage has been set up for its capture.

Kannur District Collector Arun K. Vijayan has imposed prohibitory orders under BNSS Section 13, banning public gatherings in the Muzhakkunnu panchayat limits from 10 a.m. on January 6 to 5 p.m. on January 7. The Collector, also the District Magistrate, warned of disciplinary action for violations of the order.

The restrictions followed a report from the Iritty tahsildar highlighting the danger posed to the public by the leopard’s presence.
