In a landslide that occurred in one of the most isolated areas of Western Sumatra province on Sumatra Island 15 people were buried and many more were left unaccounted for following torrential rains in the region.

Further, Ilham stated that two were hurt and twenty five were still unaccounted for.

Ilham did not know if the mine in question was illegal but all activities on site were suspended as search and recovery activities for the missing persons were still ongoing.

Due to their distance, response efforts had been deferred with rescuers including policemen soldiers and civilians walking for hours from the nearest town to the location of the incident.
“The distance is rather long, the land is very rugged. This has hindered the whole process of evacuation but people are assisting in order for this process to be done quickly,” he said.
The rainy season in Indonesia creates susceptibility for most landslides which is usually experienced between November and April.
In July at Sulawesi Island’s illegal gold mine there was a landslide accident that left at least 27 people dead.
