Kuttanad is all set for the new season of boat racing. On June 22, the Moolam Boat Race in Champakulam on the Pampa River will kick start this season.
In addition to six vallams there will be two other this participating in the race. The boat race course and heats are finalized. There are three snakeboat competitions planned having a total of three heats.
First Heat Snakeboat Nadubhagam (track 2) and Ayaparampu Pandi (track 3), Second Heat Snakeboats Champakulam (track 2) and Cheruthana (track 3), Third Heat Snakeboats Ayaparambu Valiya Divanji (track 2) and St. George (track 3). The winner in each heat will secure a place in the final round. Raja Pramukhan Trophy is up for grabs by these boats.
‘Veppu B’ grade category will see boats like Punnathura Purackal and P.G. Karipuzha competing. Although part of religious observation, Moolam race maintains a picture of peace.
The rest of the region and other parts of Kerala State will host many more races within months after this race. The grandest Nehru Trophy Boat Race’s 70th edition has been scheduled to take place on August 10 at Punnamada Lake, Alappuzha.
