A violent clash erupted between activists of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) and the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) at Thottada Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Kannur, Kerala, on Wednesday (December 11, 2024), leaving several students injured.

The altercation reportedly began when SFI activists allegedly destroyed a flag hoisted by KSU members on the campus, escalating into a physical confrontation. The police intervened and resorted to lathi-charging to disperse the clashing groups.

This incident follows the re-establishment of a KSU unit at Thottada ITI after a 34-year hiatus. A flagpole erected by KSU activists three days ago was allegedly uprooted by SFI members shortly after its installation, according to KSU claims.

KSU district president M.C. Athul and State leader Farhan Munderi visited the campus to lodge a formal complaint with the principal regarding the incident. After re-erecting a flag on the premises, they sought police assistance to meet the principal. The police escorted them to the principal’s office, but on their way, they were confronted by SFI activists, leading to a heated argument that turned violent.

The incident intensified tensions at Thottada ITI, with both sides trading accusations. .

Mr. Athul alleged that the campus union room had become a “torture room” where KSU members were brutally beaten. “We will not allow this to continue in this ITI campus,” he stated.

Youth Congress district president Vijil Mohan criticised the violence, saying, “KSU members are being brutally attacked for hoisting a flag. What is happening here is undemocratic. SFI leaders are encouraging the assaults. We will break this SFI domination and reinstate a democratic system on campus.”

However, SFI district secretary Sanjeev dismissed the allegations, claiming that the clash was staged for media attention. He said SFI students were also injured in the incident, accusing KSU of fabricating claims to garner sympathy.
