It is true that according to senior KSRTC authorities, in the event of emergency and when the driver is not sitting on the driving seat, mobile phones may be used while driving along Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.
The state-owned transport corporation has directed its staff not to use mobile phones while driving after a bus driver employed by Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation(KSRTC) was caught using one along Bengaluru-Mysuru highway.
On May 12, a KSRTC driver was seen using a cell phone while driving near Shri Chamundeshwari Hospital in Channapatna area. The CCTV footage revealed that the driver had been using a cell phone and he violated lane regulations. He serves as an employee of Hunsur Depot who operates bus from Mysuru Rural division.
This incidence is under investigation by KSRTC. Proper action will be taken by the corporation according to company officials involved. Mobile phones are only allowed for emergencies at any instance when the drivers are not on their wheels as per senior KSRTC officials.
“However, since most buses operate with just one crew member who is both a conductor and a driver, they are permitted to carry a mobile phone. This is necessary so that passengers with reserved seats can be contacted as well as during emergencies like bus breaking down where they need to get in touch with their depot.” Said one official
“Nonetheless, if any driver misuses such a privilege by using his/her cell phone while driving such acts shall not be tolerated. We will carryout investigations before taking appropriate measures on it.” He continued “We have already briefed our officers and all depots against letting our team members have it moving.”
