According to a report, Karan Johar, the Director-Producer has taken legal action against the creators of Shaadi Ke Director Karan aur Johar, an upcoming film in Hindi. Johar, a prominent personality in Bollywood, filed an application at Bombay High Court last week seeking an urgent injunction restraining the release of the film on 14th June as planned. The movie will be released tomorrow and Johar wants it temporarily stopped as well as permanently banned from ever using his name without permission in any way related to the movie.
Karan Johar pleaded that his name could not be used by anyone else in a title and that it violated his various personal rights such as privacy and publicity. He then added that he was in no way connected with this film nor with its producers. In his complaint Karan clearly stated that this is unauthorized exploitation of his ‘brand name’ which causes him great loss because it undermines all his reputation for industriousness and goodwill. The urgency of the lawsuit comes out given that promotional materials such as posters and trailers have already been posted online via social media among other platforms.
The petition read “These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar”. Moreover, “a release of such film containing brand name ‘Karan Johar’ either separately or together will cause irreparable loss and damage to its goodwill and reputation acquired after putting lots of time efforts money”.
Justice RI Chagla’s bench will hold a hearing on Thursday before the actual release date i.e., 13th June
