Kangana Ranaut has recently raised apprehensions regarding her upcoming film, Emergency. As per the actress, the movie has not yet been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). In a conversation with IANS, Kangana stated that the film had the censor clearance initially, but later on did not get the final certificate because, in her words, ‘there was a lot of drama.’
Kangana called out many interruptions including the censor which aggravated her, “There are a lot of issues with the censor as well. Well, I had that certification and I was very sure of it. But now, I do not have my certificate and they do not give me my certificate.” The censor board, she opined, must have begun to as a matter of course become murky faced, and moreover, she cautioned that she is prepared to file an action to promote her film release.
Ban Calls for and Controversies Around Emergency
Emergency presents challenges that extend further than mere certification woes. The censorship on the film has been intensified with calls for a ban, especially in the state of Telangana. A delegation of former IPS officers emulated by Tejdeep Kaur Menon has snapped the film up as anti Sikh portraying Sikhs to be doing terrorism and being anti national. Both the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Akhal Takht have also called for a quick end to this, alleging that the movie aims to tarnish the images of Sikhs.
Kangana spelt out these controversies and more when she was seeking the need of history not being altered. “We have to show history. An old woman of nearly 70 years is said to have been shot about 30 or 35 times in her house… Also think someone must have killed her. Now you want to show it… Because apparently people like you think you are capable of hurting somebody. But you have to show the history,” she said.
Kangana’s Determination to Defend her Film
On the other hand, Kangana is unmoved by the hurdles and sticks to the plan of diarrhea Emergency as scheduled. She said she will not hesitate to fight for her film to be respected as all other films and that legal actions could be made. “I am determined to even go to court to protect my film. To save my right as an individual,” she said.
Kangana also replied to the question of artistic expression, saying, “If they are going to stifle the voice of an artist as well as my creative freedom…. Some have raised their guns and we are unfazed by guns.”
Kangana Ranaut first made public the political thriller Emergency in the year 2021. However, she further stressed that the book is not a biopic of Indira Gandhi, although this character is a central figure in the plot. Kangana not only acts in the film but also produces and directing it as well. The film features Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, Shreyas Talpade, and the late Satish Kaushik as Jagjivan Ram, the ex Deputy Prime Minister of India, among others. It has a release date of September 6.
