After withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic Party’s nomination, all eyes have turned to her electoral chances against former President Donald Trump.
In the most recent polls, Harris is behind Trump by two percentage points nationally with 46% support in comparison to Trump’s 48%. This represents a minimal improvement in Biden’s state as he trailed by three percentage points with 47% of people in favor of him and just 44% supporting Trump.
Before Biden’s announcement and the assassination attempt on Trump, vital swing state surveys showed that Harris was only one point behind Pennsylvania in battleground states.
Moreover, in Virginia she had a higher advantage of five points compared to Biden who had a slim lead. In both states, Harris registered slightly stronger support from black voters, younger voters, and women—three critical demographic groups for Democrats’ win at the imminent election.
Most importantly these are areas where Biden seems to be losing support.
Biden’s numbers were much higher than Harris’ as per April polls but she has made gains since then.
There was also growing pressure on Democrats for Biden to quit. According to an AP-NORC survey conducted between July 11-15th nearly two-thirds of Democrats wanted him out of the contest so that an alternative candidate could be chosen.
