On Wednesday, the United Auto Workers (UAW) union officially gave its support to Vice President Kamala Harris for US president, a move that she is hoping could change her campaign significantly, especially in the swing state of Michigan. UAW President Shawn Fain confirmed this statement commending her stand on the working class and against capitalist greed.
The UAW with 370,000 members has deep roots in Michigan; a must-win state for any presidential contender. In January, the union’s executive board voted to back Biden’s reelection, following which it endorsed Kamala Harris after Biden dropped out of the race on July 21st.
Fain lauded Harris for her fight against profiteering by corporations as well as her advocacy for equitable trade agreements. He also remembered how she supported workers by joining them at the picket lines during the auto sector’s strike last year. On August 7th, Kamala Harris will be rallying with UAW members in Detroit.
This endorsement from UAW, a historically Democrat-leaning organization could be crucial for Harris when it comes to labor support. Even though unions such as Teamsters have not come out openly with their choices yet; nonetheless, this development from UAW highlights that she has been increasingly gaining traction among blue-collar voters.
