Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Kishore Makwana consoled family members of a hooch victim in Karunapuram, Kallakurichi town on June 26, 2024.
A group of five people from the National Commission for Scheduled Castes visited Karunapuram today which was the area where the hooch tragedy happened in Kallakurichi town.
The team’s leader was Chairman Kishore Makwana and its members were Vaddepalli Ramachander and Love Kush Kumar (both members); Sanmeet Kaur, Deputy Inspector-General of Police; and Dinesh Vyas, Deputy Director. The team talked with residents from Karunapuram about these deaths. They had also gone to a hospital to visit some patients who were taken there after this incident and held an important meeting at Collectorate.
Mr. Makwana told reporters that hooch has been sold in karunapuram for many years without any intervention by police or relevant authorities despite several complaints made. If last year State government put alertedness into consideration then nobody would have died at Karunapuram. The government’s casual attitude caused this disaster. According to him many among the dead were SC/STs and they were main breadwinners
He also urged the Karnataka Government to support education of children belonging to victims’ families. It should as well introduce severe measuresto protect such an accident from happening again in future. This is what he said: “We will send our report to the Central Government so that justice may prevail.”
