The Supreme Court on Tuesday (December 10, 2024) took note of the reports related to Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav’s speech at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event and sought details from the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav on Sunday (December 8, 2024) attended an event organised by VHP and spoke on the subject of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“We teach tolerance and kindness to our children since birth. We teach them to love animals, nature. We feel sad with pain of others. But you don’t feel the same. Why? How will your kid learn tolerance and kindness when you slaughter animals in front of them,” he questioned.

Reacting to the remark, VHP chief Alok Kumar rejected Opposition criticism of Justice Yadav for attending and speaking at a VHP event, and asserted such “awareness meets” would continue to be organised.

The All India Lawyers Union on Monday (December 9) wrote a letter to the President and Chief Justice of India (CJI) seeking action against Justice Yadav. “The widely reported speech of Justice Shekhar Yadav, sitting judge of Allahabad HC from the platform of VHP is against the Constitution, its ethos and a direct affront to its basic structure — secularism and independence of the Judiciary. It tantamounts to sabotaging of independence of the Judiciary from within,” the letter from the AILU read.

“We had invited the Judge as a faculty to speak on the Uniform Civil Code. We work among former Judges, invite them to work for the VHP, for Hindutva. But as far as sitting Judges are concerned, we do not expect them or invite them to work for the VHP. Sometimes on topics like the UCC, we do invite them to enlighten us,” Mr. Kumar told PTI on the phone.
