Based on the life of journalist and writer Karsan Das Mulji, Maharaj is a Netflix film through which Junaid Khan, the son of Bollywood star Aamir Khan, makes his acting debut. The story revolves around a journalist who despite the challenges has used his pen mightily to challenge the ‘atrocities’ committed by religious leaders.
Gujarat court gives clean chit to Maharaj featuring Junaid Khan; makers thank them
Religious sentiments of Hindu organization were offended with its publication and they filed a court case against it. It also faced opposition on social media platforms leading to boycotts. Its release was therefore pushed for one week. Gujarat High Court lifted this ban on June 21st.
After Maharaj was given clean chit by the court, Yash Raj Films (YRF) posted a long gratitude message to the Court on their official Instagram account. The statement said, “We are grateful to honorable judiciary for allowing release of Maharaj – a film about one of India’s greatest social reformer, Karsandas Mulji.”
It added that No film we have ever made has brought disgrace upon our country or its people.”
“This movie streaming right now on Netflix is our homage to one of our nation’s greatest social reformers Karsandas Mulji,” read caption of production house.
Other than Junaid, the movie features Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari Wagh.
