On June 2, Jio Studios’ Sumo Didi will be showcased at the prestigious New York Indian Film Festival 2024 (NYIFF).
Shriyam Bhagnani plays the role of Sumo Didi in this film. The inspiration for this movie is Hetal Dave, who was the first Indian to participate in sumo wrestling. First-time director Jayant Rohatgi also stars Chaitnya Sharma (Slow Cheeta). Produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Akash Chawla, Amit Chandrra and Arunava Sengupta under the banner of Jio Studios.
Jayant Rohatgi the director said that “After Tokyo and Palm Springs gave us a heartwarming welcome; I am excited over another opportunity to be part of such an esteemed film festival like NYIFF. It’s also simply outstanding to see such strong movies and filmmakers who are showcasing the best of Indian cinema. Hetal’s journey is simply remarkable. The way she defied all odds and broke gender barriers and societal biases as well as her own limitations to make what people would term impossible happen really touched me deeply inside my heart. Therefore, I hope our movie will resonate with viewers and inspire them in New York.”
Kolkata, Mumbai and Japan were some of the locations where Sumo Didi was shot – it tells a story about someone rising from obscurity through sheer determination. A girl from a middle class Marwari family that didn’t have high expectations defies these presumptions resulting into her breaking this glass ceiling.
This movie received accolades at major international film festivals.’ Sumo Didi was appreciated by audiences at Tokyo International Film Festival which is among renowned ones worldwide including 35th Palm Springs International Film Festival.
