In the Munich capital of Bavaria, a regional court issued a warning to German World Cup winner Jerome Boateng for alleged intentional bodily harm against his ex-girlfriend.
The former Bayern midfielder Boateng was given a suspended fine of €200,000 ($227,000) only payable in case he offended again.
What is known about the case
This involves allegations of violence made by Boateng’s ex-partner and mother of his 13-year-old twins during their vacation in the Caribbean waters back in 2018.
It was the third time that the matter had been heard. The presiding judge characterized their relationship as toxic.
State prosecutors had asked for a €1.12m fine while defense lawyers argued that what happened amounted to nothing more than a scuffle and pleaded for leniency in their plea bargain.
Jerome Boateng denied hitting his ex-girlfriend and throwing a light at her as well as an ice bag whilst they were on holiday abroad. At the beginning of the trial, he said that it was like being trapped into “a nightmare”. Whereas his counsel insisted that there has been an “invented narrative about wife beater.”
Presiding Judge Susanne Hemmerich summed them up on Friday saying it didn’t hold water.
A ‘terrible relationship’
Before closing statements, a witness who knows both Boateng and his former girlfriend testified that their connection was highly emotional and difficult. The man described this pair as having “a terrible relationship.”
Court proceedings have shown that Jerome Boateng pushed away his ex-girlfriend who then bit him on the lip.
In September 2021, Boateng was found guilty of domestic violence in this matter. And sentenced to pay an exceptional sum of €1.8 million by the district court with which he stood trial. However, Boateng’s team quickly appealed against this decision.
On November 2022, however, he received another assault sentence requiring him to pay €1.2m to his former partner. This judgment was set aside by a regional court because of legal errors, necessitating the recommencement of the procedure.
Bayern’s long-time defender recently moved from US Salernitana in Italy to Linzer ASK, an Austrian outfit.
