BAGHDAD: The attack on an army post in northern Iraq, which killed a commanding officer and four soldiers yesterday has been claimed by ISIS.
The attack occurred between Diyala and Salahuddin provinces; it is a rural area where extremist groups have continued to operate even after Iraq had declared victory against them in 2017.
A statement issued by the defense ministry mourning the loss of a colonel and several others from the regiment informed that security forces repelled the attack. According to security sources, five other people were injured.
Islamic State said on Telegram that machine guns and grenades had been used against their target, barracks.
After years of sectarian bloodletting following the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, Iraq enjoyed some relative stability in recent times.
