Is Elon Musk targeting free speech on X? Laura Loomer and other users question loss of blue checks and subscribers
Some are questioning whether Elon Musk is suppressing free speech.

A sudden surge in complaints on X (formerly Twitter) has raised eyebrows, as many users are reporting a loss of their coveted blue checkmarks and a significant drop in subscribers. As a growing wave of backlash builds, some are questioning whether Elon Musk, the CEO of X’s parent company, is suppressing free speech, especially after users criticized his stance on H-1B visas, the influx of Indian tech workers, and his ties with China.
Among the most prominent voices is Laura Loomer, a well-known X creator and reporter, who recently lost her verified check and subscriptions. Loomer, known for her outspoken commentary, has been vocal in questioning Musk’s support for H-1B visas and the replacement of American workers by Indian immigrants. Her sudden deactivation of verification has fueled rumors that Musk might be cracking down on accounts that express dissent against these issues.

.

“Is Elon trying to suppress free speech?” one user asked. “Is he really going after accounts that are against H1B visas?” These questions are now circulating widely across the platform.

User reactions have ranged from skepticism to frustration. “The Indians at X are playing their trump card,” one user remarked, hinting at the controversy surrounding the platform’s direction.
“Not even that, my reach doesn’t go to people I need to get reached. This has been an issue with my account for the longest time, no matter what I post!” another user added, voicing frustration over unexplained shadowbanning.

“Something is always going on with this platform,” said a third, clearly exasperated by the ongoing issues.

“I’m hoping for the best (IT issues), but preparing for the worst (stand and fight for freedom of speech),” remarked a concerned user, citing the increasing suspicions of suppression.

Amid the growing unrest, some users are speculating that Musk is targeting certain ideological groups, especially those critical of his views on global immigration policies. One theory suggests that influencers are re-uploading the same profile pictures, temporarily losing their blue checks to then claim that Musk revoked their verification for dissenting opinions.
“They’re alleging Elon is targeting them for disagreeing with him,” one user claimed, calling it “a mad conspiracy.”
However, others have pointed to a more practical explanation. “They were all affiliates of ConservativeOG,” one user explained. “The account is apparently having issues with its gold checkmark, so everyone affiliated with it lost their status temporarily.” This suggests that the issue could be related to the platform’s affiliate status and payment for gold checkmarks, rather than a deliberate attempt to suppress voices.

While the truth remains unclear, the confusion surrounding the sudden changes to account verifications and subscriptions has led many to question whether free speech on X is truly under threat.
