The helicopter on which Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was travelling is said to have suffered a “hard landing” on May 19. Iranian state media reported, without giving more details. It was stated that the incident took place in East Azerbaijan province of Iran where Mr. Raisi had been traveling. According to the state-run IRNA news agency, Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and the Governor of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province were among other officials and bodyguards who had boarded the helicopter.

On the eve of fifth phase of Lok Sabha elections, Election Commission (EC) said it has made necessary arrangements for smooth conduct of polls in 49 seats across eight States/Union Territories including many in urban areas as Mumbai, Lucknow, Hoogly, Howrah and Thane.Voting for 35 Assembly constituencies will also be held along with this phase of polling in Odisha Assembly.Elections are also due in politically important constituencies like Rae Bareli and Amethi for Congress party in Uttar Pradesh.

Saying that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is using threats against Hindu religious organizations such as Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Ramakrishna Mission and ISCKON Prime Minister Narendra Modi charged that she did so in order to “appease her vote bank under pressure from Muslim fundamentalists”. The remarks were made by him at election meetings in the state on Saturday, a day after Mamata accused “some sadhus (saints)” of Bharat Sevashram Sangha, Ramakrishna Mission and ISCKON of “working for the interest of BJP”.

IMD has advised people to avoid heat exposure and keep cool and take measures to prevent dehydration.

Southwest monsoon makes onset over Nicobar Islands: IMD

India Meteorological Department said that the monsoon season of South-West, which is the lifeline of India’s agrarian economy had started on Sunday in the southernmost part of the country, Nicobar Islands. “Southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of the Maldives, and the Comorin area and some parts of the South Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands and South Andaman Sea on Sunday,” the weather office said.

SIT likely to submit report on poll violence in Andhra Pradesh to ECI on May 20

The SIT (special investigation team) constituted to probe into poll related violence in Andhra Pradesh is expected to submit its report to Election Commission of India (ECI) by May 20. The government shifted Palnadu Collector as well as Tirupati Superintendent of Police (SP), while SPs for Anantapur districts and Palnadu along with twelve police officers were suspended. The government established SIT to look further into violence.

KKR finished their league engagements on twenty points with nine wins including two more single points due wash-outs at some stations; while SRH (17 points) edged out RR (17 points) based on their superior Net Run Rate (NRR). KKR will play SRH in a Qualifier match in Ahmedabad tomorrow followed by ‘Eliminator’ between RR versus Royal Challengers Bengaluru at same venue.
