On Thursday, mobile internet in Bangladesh was suspended following deadly protests that had left at least seven dead and wounded more than 500 people in the past two days.
“Only hospitals and emergency services will remain operational”, said the protestors during a countrywide bandh.
The Bangladeshi PM spoke Wednesday night with President Sheikh Hasina promising justice for demonstrators who died.“Moreover, the Supreme Court ruling would not disappoint student campaigners for quota reform”.
Why are students protesting?
Young people in Bangladesh have been demonstrating against reservations in government employment as well as rising rates of unemployment.
Within a population of 170 million, almost 32 million young people in Bangladesh are neither working nor studying. The students want to eliminate the current reservation system of 30% reserved seats for freedom fighters’ kin.
What PM Sheikh Hasina said?
To ensure that there is fair trial and justice following recent undesirable incidents including killing, an announcement declaring judicial enquiry came from the Prime Minister’s Office.
“Who started the conflict inciting it? For what purpose did anyone push the nation into anarchic situation? This has to be found out,” she added.
“But it is a matter of regret that some quarters took advantage of the movement to fulfil their unacceptable ambitions through terrorist activities”, she added.
Indian nationals urged to stay indoors amid escalating tensions.
Amidst growing tension in this South Asian country, Indian high commission advised its nationals here to remain indoors. It also issued emergency contact numbers.
“In view of the ongoing situation in Bangladesh, the Indian community members and the Indian students residing in Bangladesh are advised to avoid travel and minimize their movement outside their living premises. In case of any urgency or need for assistance, please reach out to our Assistant High Commissions at these Emergency numbers,” read a statement issued by the Embassy.
