On August 6, 2024, India bloc parties staged a demonstration in Parliament premises demanding the withdrawal of life and health insurance premiums at 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST).
During the protest on the steps leading to Makar Dwar of Parliament, MPs from various parties such as TMC, Congress, AAP, NCP (SC), among others participated.
Protesting MPs carried placards inscribed with “Tax terrorism” and shouted slogans demanding that GST be rolled back on life and health insurance premiums.
In parliament itself Trinamool Congress MPs have raised this issue; party president and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman about it.
Nitn Gadkari also wrote to Ms. Sitharaman urging her to remove what he termed as GST which taxed uncertainties of life and restricted the growth of industry.
