On Saturday (August 17, 2024), doctors in Ernakulam district of Kerala joined the nationwide protest against the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital in Kolkata.
Several doctor organizations led by the Indian Medical Association demonstrated at Government Medical College and Hospital in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on August 17, 2024.
The withdrawal of services called for by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) from 6 a.m on Saturday to 6 a.m on Sunday resulted in hundreds of doctors from different sectors keeping away from work thereby affecting outpatient and non-essential services.
Participation of senior doctors in the strike partially affected outpatient services at General Hospital, Ernakulam. Some junior doctors managed the outpatient wing which was visit less as many doctors were already observing strike.
Candlelight vigil
However, emergency services were not affect at Government Medical College, Ernakulam. While some out-patient wings operated with few patients attending them since most other units had gone to total down tools during the strike call.
Ernakulam IMA is planning to hold a candlelight vigil demonstration on Saturday evening demanding exemplary punishment for the culprits and a central law to ensure safety to medical professionals. Office bearers said that Doctors will start marching from IMA house Kaloor around seven o’clock PM.
