The Mossad allegedly assassinated Wadie Haddad, a prominent member of the PFLP (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine) in a very cloak-and-dagger operation akin to a spy thriller. It is said that they did so by using a unique and untraceable method.
Haddad was reportedly eliminated after eating Belgian chocolates that contained poison with slow action according to Aaron Klein, an Israeli journalist in his 2006 book Striking Back. The same poisonous ingredient was also insidiously inserted into his toothpaste by the Daily Star.
‘Agent Sadness’
Mossad contracted ‘Agent Sadness’ for this mission as he could easily access Haddad’s personal spaces. Accordingly, they substituted Haddad’s toothpaste with another similar-looking tube containing poison made at the Israeli Institute of Biological Research.
Thus, each time Haddad had chocolate or brushed his teeth he would introduce small amounts of poison into his bloodstream resulting in a painful death. Haddad is believed to have spent his last days in agony at the hospital, shouting before being put under sedation; this eventually led to his death from poisoning.
Who Was Haddad?
Among other high-profile acts, Wadie Haddad was linked with Entebbe Hijacking of Air France Flight 139 on July 4th 1976. The plane had departed from Tel Aviv and was supposed to land at Paris but it ended up in Libya and Uganda because of diversionary tactics taken by hijackers. Israel reacted through Operation Thunderbolt which saw Lieutenant Colonel Yonatan Netanyahu die during its execution while commanding it successfully.
On March 19th, 1978, East German secret service Stasi airlifted him to East Berlin taking him to a top-secret hospital where he was assigned the name ‘Ahmed Doukli’. No course could be established despite extensive medical examinations which included rat-poisoning and the thallium-poisoning suspicions.
Haddad’s situation deteriorated leading to heavy bleeding and critically low platelet count. He underwent ten days of suffering and died on 29th March, 1978. Panmyelopathy caused brain hemorrhage, pneumonia having been diagnosed by Professor Otto Prokop in the autopsy; however, it took many years for investigators to find out the cause of poisoning itself.
Did Mossad Have a Hand in Hamas Chief’s Killing?
In line with this intelligence operation, Mossad purportedly deployed Iranian security agents who planted explosives in three rooms at an IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps) guest house where Haniyeh was staying according to The Telegraph.
The bombers allegedly detonated their devices remotely at 2 a.m. on Wednesday killing Haniyeh while he was in Tehran attending the inauguration of President Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran. Earlier, The Telegraph reported that two officials from Iran had stated that during Raisi’s funeral the original plan was to kill him but failed due to heavy crowds inside the building which increased chances of failure.
