On Tuesday, the Hong Kong national security police arrested six people across the city, on charges of sedition under a new law for national security. One of those apprehended was a pro-democracy lawyer who is already in jail. The arrestees were suspected by Secretary Chris Tang to have used a Facebook page that ‘advocated hatred’ against Hong Kong and China govts as well as the judiciary.
Chow Hang-tung was one of those apprehended; prominent barrister and pro-democracy activist who has detained since September 2021 at high-security facility. In March, these were the first arrests made pursuant to a fresh set of national security laws passed by the city’s pro-Beijing legislature despite worldwide disapproval.
