According to the police, history sheeter ‘Kakkathoppu’ Balaji was shot dead during an encounter with the police in the early hours of Wednesday (September 18, 2024) at a deserted area in Vyasarpadi. He was also a criminal in several cases.
A special team of police led by Kodungaiyur was out on him since he was accused of murdering and there was also a non-bailable warrant against him. Police sources said after receiving information, around 4:30 am, a team of police encircled him as he was hiding behind the BSNL Quarters located near Vyasarpadi railway station. He also fired a gun that was directed towards the police team; however, this bullet hit the front part of the vehicle. Saravanan, Inspector of Kodungaiyur Police opened fire after Balaji did.
Balaji succumbed to injuries sustained in the duel and was given emergency treatment at Government Stanley Hospital where the attending physicians pronounced him dead on arrival. After which his body was taken for autopsy.
The late ‘Kakkathoppu’ Balaji bore this name from the time he was born and came into the limelight early in kakkathoppu area near seven wells of north chennai. if he was just a history sheeter, he would be of an A+ category with more than 5 cases of murder awaiting him. He had approximately 50 cases on him like murder, attempt to murder, extortion and ganja smuggling. He had been in the Goondas Act detention on 10 different occasions.
The scene of occurrence was visited by experts from the forensic science department as well as senior police officers and an investigation conducted.
