Heavy rains have caused a lot of destruction in the area, ranging from inundating roads to destroying crops all over Central Travancore in Kerala.
The water stages in all major rivers across this vicinity have been on a steady increase as people in villages of the high ranges still stay alert. Though there are no reports of any major incidents so far, however, the situation remains tense.
The Kottayam District Collector declared a holiday for educational institutions on June 26th due to heavy rains. Traffic along Kottayam-Kumily route was disrupted due to fallen trees and power failures were also reported from different places, which occurred as a result of uprooted trees.
The Pampa river has overflowed its banks at Karumbanmoozhi and Arayanjilimon making it difficult for villagers to cross them. Massive inflow from the upper reaches is also beginning to invade residential areas of Upper Kuttanad. A team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is now positioned at Thiruvalla to handle any emergencies
Break open dam shutters
Heavy inflows into dams across Pathanamthitta district are associated with torrential rains. Two shutters of Maniyar barrage had been opened for regulating its inflow, and the water level had reached 190.10 cm in Maniyar dam.
On the other hand, water levels in twin reservoirs Kakki-Anathodu and Pampa dam stood at 946.56 feet and 967.3 feet respectively during reporting time.
